This map is an attempt to indicate the vast scale of political imprisonment in present-day Indonesia. It lists the known places of detention region by region, gives some figures for the number of detainees held in each and the date of each report. Official information is shown in normal print, unofficial in cursive. The final picture is far from comprehensive, and shows the extent of Amnesty's knowledge rather than the real situation. Places of detention are not listed, and the Government does not issue precise and reliable statistics.
We have not been able to arrive at a total figure for the number of detainees; equally we have not included releases which have taken place sporadically since 1970, but which, though important, have not altered the essential size or urgency of the problem. It should be noted that although some figures are inevitably lower now than they were in 1970, others have risen - East Kalimantan and Nusakambangan are two examples.
